8580 SID Adapter: Modernize Your Retro Sound, Bridge the Gap Between SID Generations

For the chiptune audiophile, the choice between the classic 6581 and the refined 8580 SID chip is a matter of sonic character. However, because of their differing voltage and filter requirements, these chips aren't naturally interchangeable.

Developed by Quazar, this adapter allows you to seamlessly plug an 8580 SID into any circuit originally designed for the 6581. Whether you are using a classic Commodore 64, or a modern DIY kit like the RC2014, this module ensures your hardware is safe and your audio is pristine.

This module is universal, It works in any computer or peripheral originally built for the 6581.

Technical Precision

The 8580 SID Adapter isn't just a physical bridge; it manages the vital electronic differences between the chip versions:

  • Voltage Regulation: Safely converts the 12V supply of the 6581 circuit to the 9V required by the 8580.

  • Optimized Filtering: Includes the specific filter capacitors required for the 8580’s distinct sound.

  • Paddle Inputs: Adds extra capacitance to the POTX and POTY inputs, adhering to the original Commodore 64 schematic notes for maximum compatibility.

Installation & Physical Specs

  • Plug-and-Play: The underside features high-quality turned pins that plug directly into a standard 28-pin IC socket.

  • Top Socket: Your 8580 SID chip then plugs securely into the top of the adapter.

  • Dimensions: The board measures 37mm x 41mm. For tight builds, the Quazar logo panel can be snapped or cut off, reducing the footprint to just 23mm x 41mm.

  • Clearance: The board overhangs the right side of the host socket by 5mm. The total stack height (Adapter + SID chip) is 15mm above the host socket.

  • C64 Compatibility: Confirmed to fit inside "breadbin" Commodore 64 models (PCB revisions 250407 and 250425) with ample clearance for the case lid.

Note: If your original 'faulty' 6581 chip is soldered directly to the motherboard, you will need to desolder it and install a 28-pin IC socket to use this adapter.
