UGH! (Amiga, 1992) Published by Play Byte
Ever wondered what it was like to be a prehistoric entrepreneur? Forget hunting mammoths; it’s time to clock in for the world’s first-ever taxi service! In UGH!, you take control of a hardworking, propeller-hat-wearing caveman named Wiggy, whose sole mission is to ferry grumpy cave-dwellers across treacherous prehistoric landscapes.
It’s a charming, physics-based platformer that combines the frantic energy of Flappy Bird with the precision of Lunar Lander—all wrapped in a gorgeous 16-bit Stone Age aesthetic.
Gameplay Mechanics: Pedal to the Metal
The premise is simple, but the execution is delightfully challenging. Using your pedal-powered flying contraption, you must:
Pick Up Passengers: Hover near a cave entrance and wait for a passenger to hop in.
Navigate Hazards: Manoeuvre through narrow tunnels, avoid rising water levels, and dodge hostile prehistoric wildlife like pterodactyls and dinosaurs.
Land Softly: This isn’t a bumper car! If you hit a platform or a wall too hard, your fragile flying machine will shatter into prehistoric toothpicks.
Manage Energy: Flying is hard work. You’ll need to knock fruit out of trees to keep your stamina up so you can keep those pedals turning.
Key Features
69 Levels of Chaos: Progress through dozens of increasingly complex stages featuring wind currents, moving platforms, and aggressive enemies.
Cooperative Multiplayer: Team up with a friend in a two-player mode where you both share the screen to clear the skies of passengers.
Physics-Driven Fun: Feel the weight of your aircraft. The more passengers you carry (or the heavier they are), the harder it is to gain altitude!
Classic Amiga Visuals: Play Byte delivered vibrant, colourful sprites and smooth animations that represent the "Golden Era" of Amiga gaming.
Why It’s a Classic
UGH! stands out because of its perfect balance between humour and frustration. One moment you’re peacefully hovering over a lake, and the next, a dinosaur is sneezing you out of the sky. It is a true test of reflexes and patience that proves being a taxi driver has been a headache since the dawn of time.
Pro Tip: Keep an eye on the water level! Some stages flood over time, turning your lucrative taxi route into a prehistoric swimming pool.
