Titus the Fox: To Marrakech and Back
Released in 1992 by Titus Interactive, Titus the Fox is a classic side-scrolling platformer that stands out for its vibrant visuals and quirky personality. Originally released on the Amiga (and ported to several other systems), it remains a nostalgic staple of the early 90s European gaming scene.
The Story & Gameplay
The plot is simple but charming: Titus’s beloved girlfriend, Suzy, has been kidnapped on the other side of the Sahara Desert. To rescue her, Titus must navigate through 15 levels spanning across the desert, bustling Moroccan markets, and dark Moroccan sewers.
Combat Mechanics: Unlike many platformers of the era, Titus doesn't jump on enemies to kill them. Instead, he picks up objects—like crates, balls, or even the enemies themselves—and hurls them to clear his path.
Verticality: The game features significant vertical exploration, often requiring you to stack crates or find hidden "warps" to progress.
Difficulty: Known for its "Euro-platformer" challenge, the game requires precise jumping and clever use of the environment to avoid traps and eccentric enemies (like dogs in capes or construction workers).
Why it’s an Amiga Classic
The Amiga version is often cited as the definitive experience due to its smooth scrolling and a catchy, upbeat soundtrack that utilizes the system's superior audio hardware. The sprite work is expressive, capturing the mischievous spirit of the Titus mascot.
