Menace is a classic side-scrolling shoot 'em up released for the Commodore Amiga in 1988. Developed by David Jones's fledgling DMA Design (who later created Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto) and published by Psygnosis, it was a landmark debut for the studio.
Set on the hostile, bio-mechanic planet of Draconia, the game tasks players with piloting a lone space fighter through six visually distinct levels to overthrow six ruthless dictators. Heavily influenced by arcade hits like R-Type and Salamander, players must blast through waves of grotesque alien life-forms, collect debris tokens to upgrade weaponry (such as lasers and cannons), and survive intense end-of-level guardian battles.
Menace received high praise upon release for its smooth scrolling, slick arcade action, gritty organic artwork, and a memorable, hard-driving rock soundtrack by David Whittaker. It remains a celebrated piece of Amiga history that successfully launched one of the UK's most legendary development studios.
