Released by the legendary Jeff Minter (Llamasoft), Llamatron is a psychedelic, high-octane tribute to the arcade classic Robotron: 2084. It remains one of the most beloved " success stories" on the Amiga.
The Gameplay
In Llamatron, you control a laser-spitting llama trapped in a series of single-screen arenas. Your mission is simple but chaotic:
Destroy everything: Eliminate waves of bizarre enemies including kitchen appliances, space grunts, and screaming mandalas.
Rescue the "Beasties": Collect sheep, goats, and other llamas for bonus points.
Power-Up: Snag items like shields, "smart bombs," and the game-changing Auto-Fire to survive the escalating madness.
Why It’s a Classic
Twin-Stick Action: While the Amiga usually relied on one-button joysticks, Llamatron innovatively allowed for "strafe" mechanics, mimicking the dual-joystick feel of the arcades.
The Aesthetic: It features Minter’s signature "neon-fever-dream" visuals and sampled sound effects that were incredibly quirky for the time.
Two-Player Co-op: You and a friend could tackle the 100 levels together, doubling the lasers and the farm-animal rescue missions.
