Exile (originally released by Audiogenic) is a legendary, open-world sci-fi arcade-adventure game renowned for introducing a ground-breaking physics engine to home computers.
Core Gameplay & Physics
You control a lone astronaut equipped with a jetpack, stranded on the underground labyrinth of the alien planet Phoebus after a rogue scientist named Triax steals key ship components and captures your crew.
Unlike standard platformers of its era, Exile features a full Newtonian simulation incorporating gravity, inertia, momentum, friction, and buoyancy. Every movement requires careful management of your jetpack to avoid fatal falls. The game boasts:
Open-ended exploration across a massive subterranean world.
Complex environmental puzzles requiring you to manipulate objects, activate teleports, and interact with hostile or cooperative alien creatures.
Unique mechanics, such as a checkpoint system where your suit automatically teleports you back to saved safety coordinates if your health depletes.
The Standard vs. AGA Versions
Two distinct iterations of the game:
Standard (OCS/ECS) Version: Features smaller sprites, a wider field of view, and a classic status panel at the bottom of the screen.
Exile AGA: Released later (alongside the CD32 console version) to harness the enhanced hardware of newer Amiga systems (like the A1200). It features a heavily overhauled aesthetic—swapping the original space suit sprite for a larger, tougher-looking protagonist, rich 256-color backdrops, and redrawn, high-detail assets. However, the AGA version zooms the camera in closer to the action, reducing peripheral visibility and making navigation slightly more challenging than the original layout.
Ultimately, Exile remains a triumph of atmospheric design and technical ambition, blending cerebral puzzle-solving with tense physical navigation.
