Step back into the mid-90s Amiga scene with Charlie J. Cool, a side-scrolling platformer that combines classic "jump-and-collect" gameplay with a quirky, supernatural premise. Developed by Nevada and published by NRC in 1996, this title arrived during the sunset years of the Amiga, offering a polished experience for fans of the genre.

The Story

The game features one of the most unique setups in platforming history: Our hero, Charles, is simply walking down the street when he is suddenly crushed by a falling grand piano. Finding himself in the "Netherworld"—a place that is "somewhere, but not really anywhere"—Charles must trudge through a series of bizarre environments to find his way back to the land of the living.

Gameplay & Features

  • Massive Adventure: Navigate through 28 levels across 7 distinct worlds, each filled with unique hazards and enemies.

  • The Pursuit of "Cool": True to his name, Charlie sports shades and a smooth gait, moving with silky-smooth animations that were praised for their fluidity on the Amiga hardware.

  • Multiple Endings: Your performance matters! The number of items you collect and enemies you defeat determines your final score and influences the game’s ending sequence.

  • Classic Mechanics: Dodge traps, leap across moving platforms, and hunt for keys to unlock the exit of each stage. Collect coins along the way to guide your path through "blind leaps" and dangerous sections.

  • Smooth AGA Visuals: While available for the A500/A600, the AGA version takes full advantage of the Amiga's enhanced chipset for vibrant colours and parallax scrolling.
